This ancient tale of a rainbow bridge to heaven is the genesis of a poem (author unknown) written about twenty years ago called the Rainbow Bridge.
The Rainbow Bridge describes a spiritual place often referred to by people whose pets have died. The belief is that the souls of deceased pets go to wait for their owners in a green meadow paradise. On the day their owners arrive, they both cross the Rainbow Bridge and go into heaven together.
